"Upon Further Review"

2010 Season Week 10 Clips

Kick Catch Interference (or not)      A call that typically requires input from multiple officials is kick catch interference.   While the B may easily see the returner contacted early, he often does not have best look at what may have caused the contact to occur.  In this play, an official deemed the Team A player was blocked into the returner.  The viewer can decide for him/her self.   If the official rules that the interference was caused by the block , then shouldn't there be a flag for a block in the back?.

Trick Shift    Offensive teams have a variety of gimmicks they will use to draw Team B offside in critical situations, i.e. 4th and less than 5.  When deemed to be done for that purpose, they are usually illegal.  Shifts are permissible only if "smooth and rythmical".  If the movement simulates the start of the play it is a false start.  (7-1-4-b) Another example of an offensive team trick that was properly officiated: Snapper False Start

Ump Help on Inc Pass    The umpire is critical on many of the quick passes that are down low and may or may not be caught by the receiver.  He may have the only good look and can save the crew.   This umpire does a good job being in position and making that critical call.

Batting and the End Zone      The viewer can decide where the ball was batted.  The B was in great position but had his view somewhat impaired by the batter's body.  The S was a little late getting to the goal line so could not help.   The B does have a bean bag in the field of play, apparently indicating he saw the bat in the field of play.  Had the kick actually been batted after it broke the plane of the goal line, Team B could have elected a touchback. Since snap was at the A-45, most crews would not have S and/or F on goal line.  Can Instant Replay step into this situation?  Even if judgment was that there was no batting in the EZ, wasn't there an illegal touch at the B-2 also and shouldn't ball be spotted there instead of the B-1?

Game Control     Time is short in the 2d period and Team A is trying to punch it in.  After a big pile up, 1 or more defenders appear to be trying to prevent Team A from quickly gettng ready to snap again.  Officials can penalize Team B for illegal delay but there are are other options available.  Observe Team B #25.  In this play, the decision was made to simply stop the clock until the players unpiled.  This would not normally be done unless Team B was doing something that delayed the unpiling.   By electing to run a play that guarantees there will be a large pile-up, Team A takes a chance of running out of time.

Horse Collar    There continues to be confusion by players, coaches, fans and officials over what is and is NOT a horse collar tackle.  In order to be a foul, doesn't the tackler have to grab the inside back collar or inside side collar of jersey or shoulder pads?

Multiple Illegal Touches     Sometimes on a scrimmage kick, team A will illegally touch the ball at different spots.  Remember to award the ball to Team B at the spot most advantageous to them.  Perhaps concern over getting a new ball caused loss of concentration?

Kick Catch Interference   Yes, Virginia, even if the kick is caught, it is possible to have a foul for kick catch interference.  It is a foul if contact occurs simultaneous with first touching of the ball by receiver (6-4-1-c).

Blocking Below the Waist by a RB    If a RB  (#23) is lined up inside the tackle box and not in motion at the snap, is he prohibited from blocking below the waist towards the original position of the ball?  Perhaps the calling official saw something else though as penalty announcement was for "illegal crackback" and signal was for "clipping".
